NACBS Statement of Support for Goldsmiths

NACBS Statement of Support for Goldsmiths

The North American Conference on British Studies stands in support of our members and other colleagues who are staff and faculty of Goldsmiths, University of London, who are facing program closures and redundancies across 11 departments, including History. The proposed cuts would mean the closure of the MA in Black British History and MA in Queer History – two groundbreaking programs that are the first and only of their kind. The loss of these courses would be devastating to the community of often underrepresented scholars these programs have fostered and supported. British studies needs the contributions of these diverse scholars and scholarship to grow and thrive. We believe that our strength as an academic and publicly engaged community of scholars relies on continuing support for the groundbreaking programs at Goldsmiths that have helped unite us in the pursuit of a just and equitable society.

The NACBS is deeply concerned by the proposed redundancies; We stand in solidarity with the staff and faculty of Goldsmiths, and join the Royal Historical Society in their call that Goldsmiths’ managers “think again and protect – not further erode – the assets and talents integral to Goldsmiths History.”
