The information pages for NACBS prizes and grants are now updated for the 2025 application season.

Brief descriptions and the deadlines for 2025 prizes, grants and fellowships appear below. Please visit the Prizes and Grants page on the NACBS website for complete information and application procedures.

 

Please note that information for the 2025 NACBS Huntington Library Fellowship and the NACBS Folger Institute Fellowship will be announced in upcoming months.

 

The John Ben Snow Prize of $500 is awarded annually by the NACBS for the best book by a North American scholar in any field of British Studies dealing with the period from the Middle Ages through the eighteenth century.Deadline: 1 May 2025The Stansky Book Prize of $500 is awarded annually by the NACBS for the best book published anywhere by a North American scholar on any aspect of British studies since 1800.Deadline: 1 May 2025The Judith R. Walkowitz Article Prize is awarded annually for the best published article on issues relating to gender and sexuality in British culture. The prize is open to scholars resident in North America working in any time period and in any discipline in British Studies, and carries a cash award of $250. The 2025 prize will be awarded to an article published during the calendar year 2024.Deadline: 1 May 2025The Walter D. Love Prize in History is a $250 award given annually by the NACBS for the best article or paper of similar length or scope by a North American scholar in the field of British history. The 2025 prize will be awarded to an article published during the calendar year 2024.Deadline: 1 May 2025

 

NACBS Diversity and Inclusion Fellowships: Inspired by the events of 2020 and the Black Lives Matter movement, these awards aim to encourage all forms of diversity and inclusion within the profession of British Studies by channeling support and funding to emerging scholars belonging to minority groups currently underrepresented in the academy.

Deadline: 1 May 2025 

The NACBS Pre-Dissertation Grants are awarded to Ph.D. candidates to pursue preliminary research on potential dissertation-length studies related to any topic in British (including Scottish, Irish, and Imperial) history or British Studies. Two grants in the amount of $4000, which must be used to offset costs associated with research travel outside of North America, will be awarded on an annual basis to students enrolled in a U.S. or Canadian institution.

Deadline: 1 April 2025

 

The NACBS Dissertation Fellowship is awarded to support dissertation research in the British Isles on any topic of British (including Scottish, Irish and Imperial) history or British Studies. The Fellowship consists of a $10,000 stipend. Two runners-up will receive a $5,000 travel grant.

Deadline: 1 May 2025

 

Undergraduate Essay Prize: Each year the NACBS awards up to eight prizes of $100 each to the best essays on British topics submitted by undergraduates studying in American and Canadian universities. Essays may be from any department –History, English, Philosophy, Cultural Studies, Gender Studies, etc.–as long as they relate to British Studies and date from the 2023-24 academic year.

Deadline: 30 June 2025
