About the NACBS

The North American Conference on British Studies (NACBS) is a scholarly society dedicated to British Studies throughout history and around the world. The NACBS sponsors a scholarly journal, the Journal of British Studies, online publications, an annual conference, as well as several academic prizes, graduate fellowships, and undergraduate essay contests. The international membership brings together specialists in history, literature, art history, politics, law, sociology, economics, and many more fields.

About the Opportunity

The NACBS is excited to expand its digital presence to reach a wider audience and to continue to build community among those interested in British Studies. The organization currently hosts a website ( and has social media accounts on Twitter and Facebook.

Working with the Executive Director and the digital media committee of the NACBS, the new digital media director will lead the effort to redesign our website and renew our social media presence.

The responsibilities of this part-time position include:

  • - Identify innovative and inclusive ways to promote knowledge of and interest in British Studies through digital media

  • - Broaden the NACBS’s digital outreach to new audiences and organizations 

  • - Refresh the NACBS web presence, initiating new forms of direct community engagement and communication, along with adapting new forms of conference participation at regional and transnational levels with our partner institutions

  • - Develop and communicate messaging on the organization’s social media platforms

  • - Regularly refresh and update the website and integrate activity on the Journal of British Studies partner website 

  • - Monitor and report the usage of the organization’s digital assets and promote increased engagement


The successful applicant will have: 

  • - Familiarity with British studies

  • - Expertise in social media, including Twitter

  • - Knowledge of web platforms, such as WordPress, Wix and Squarespace

The University of Pittsburgh is seeking an Assistant Editor for the Journal of British Studies (JBS) published by Cambridge University Press on behalf of the North American Conference on British Studies. Will provide editorial and administrative assistance to Editor-designate, Dr. Holger Hoock, J. C. Amundson Professor of British History. Process incoming manuscripts on Editorial Manager. Help oversee peer review. Edit manuscripts accepted for publication, including editing for content, grammar; fact and cite checking; final copyediting; preparing copy for submission to publisher; reviewing proofs and galleys. Serve as a liaison among authors, Editor, Associate Editors, Editorial Board, and publisher. Take responsibility for ensuring the accuracy of editorial information and instructions for contributors on the journal’s website. Maintain JBS archiving policy. Collate annual report on submissions, acceptance rates, timetable for decisions, provenance of submissions. Assist Editor with professional responsibilities and with organizing journal-related academic events. Routine record keeping of expenses for mailing, telephone,supplies, travel, and administrative duties. Might supervise student workers. The NACBS is looking for a volunteer Assistant Webmaster to help maintain our
website and to develop the web presence of our organization. The
preferred candidate will have experience designing and maintaining
websites. Knowledge of basic HTML and CSS and familiarity with FTP and a
CMS such as Wordpress is necessary. Familiarity with Adobe CS5 is a plus.
