Comment from Margaret DeLacy, margaret@teleport.com

I was sorry that this discussion did not include any reference to the lively community of working independent scholars, who include several scholars of British history. Independent scholarship has a long and very distinguished tradition in British studies. There are national and local independent scholars' organizations which provide support and collegiality for working researchers. For more information, see the website of the National Coalition of Independent Scholars, at http://www.ncis.org/. The website includes a call for papers for the next NCIS conference, "Independent Scholars: The Public Intellectuals of the Future" which will take place in North Carolina from October 27 to October 29, 2000.
